Oficina Informatica-teaching the world!

We offer you a free IT workshop! What is our context as we promote this initiative? It’s all about freedom. The software is a matter of freedom, open source: people should be able to use the software in any way that is useful to them in a social context. Software differs from material objects: you wouldn’t catch us offering free lunches, cars or houses – as it can be copied and changed much more easily and without any actual property changing hands.

These possibilities make software as useful, and we believe that those who use software can be free to use it to their advantage. Where Linux was the domain of only experts and professionals, now thanks to improving the usability of free software, we are all potentially able to transform our PC’s into high powered logic machines! Linux is an operating system built by a large community of developers which, thanks to collaborative work, has reached the highest standards of stability, reliability and usability, making it very competitive compared to Windows and Mac OS.

Thanks to Linux we are free to work, play, communicate and learn with the support of a very active and helpful community.  Our objectives as an organization are the following:

  1. To raise awareness and spread free software and good ethics in computing.
  2. Promote simple tools to use the computer in a conscious, logical way.
  3. To develop a shared culture to free the movement of ideas, critical consumption and savings, including through the exchange and reuse of old computers.

These goals are a first group of goals that will be shared and developed with the help of the members. As we begin the association represents a place where both physical and intangible find opportunities for comparison, assistance and information on computer free. At the same time we intend to create a space of free expression and creativity where they can experience first-hand the potential of free software.

Our articles, laid out below, further define our aim and strategies.

ARTICLE 1: This consists of the Cultural Association “Freedom of Information Workshop” with headquarters in Turin Corso Francia.

ARTICLE 2: The Association is nonpartisan, nonsectarian, and not for profit. The Association is unlimited.

ARTICLE 3: The Association carries out activities for the promotion and dissemination of free software, for the defense of freedom of scientific research and computer science, for knowledge sharing and knowledge.

We aim to reduce the digital divide and promote access as well as the conscious use of new technologies by everyone, in every country across the globe. In this sense, the Association is committed locally to disclose the use and responsible use of new technologies in the most disadvantaged segments of the population away from the world of computers, while the Association seeks to promote and develop the use of PC in the poor countries of the Global South through interventions of international cooperation.

Further objectives of the Association are as follows:

  • To encourage the spread and the responsible use of IT tools through a proper computer literacy.
  • Fighting against the adoption of proprietary standards in the field of computer science and treatment of all kinds of information from the government, the public school system and home users in general as well as foster the adoption of these standards.
  • To fight against any attempt to monopolize the public and private management and distribution of information, knowing that the Free Software gets its first reason to exist by its own freedom of access to information sources.
  • Encourage the adoption of such licenses free even in the publication of technical documentation, in textbooks, and in all artistic and cultural production in general.
  • Allow the use of hardware into disuse or available at low cost through the use of Free Software, to help those who cannot afford to buy the latest technology.
